How India’s Film Industry Took Government Land & Subsidies but Raised Ticket Prices for the Public

Massive Land Allotments, Heavy Subsidies—Why Are Indian Movie Tickets So Expensive
Massive Land Allotments, Heavy Subsidies—Why Are Indian Movie Tickets So Expensive?

🎥 What the Film Industry Says —

“We are self-sufficient… we take the risks… our business, our rules.”
“We are heroes! Our movie is big! Our business, our rate!”

But the real question is…

🎟️ To pay crores to actors,
to let them buy luxury cars and properties,
ticket prices are raised to ₹200… ₹300… ₹500… even ₹1000.

Why?
Isn’t it the poor fans who are paying that money?

🎥 They say ‘self-sufficient’… but what about government land, subsidies & support?

Look at what governments have given them over decades —
any ordinary viewer would be shocked.

🔸 For Ramoji Rao – 505 acres

Allotted in 2015 in Ranga Reddy district for the Om City project.
One of the biggest media real-estate blocks in India.
Its value is unimaginable.

🔸 For ANR’s Annapurna Studios – 22 acres

Given in the 1970s for just ₹7,500–₹8,000 per acre.
Today, one acre there costs crores.

🔸 Padmalaya Studios – 9.518 acres

Given in 1982 in Shaikpet at ₹8,500 per acre.
Later the studio sold 5.53 acres at market price — huge profit.
Who benefited? The studio.
What did the government or public gain? Nothing.

🔸 Suresh Productions – 34.44 acres

Allotted in 2003 through GO 963 (despite controversies).

🔸 Director N. Shankar – 5 acres

Allotted by the Telangana government in Mokilla, Ranga Reddy.

🎬 Without this land & support, would today’s studio ecosystem even exist?

Film studios, technical hubs, OTT post-production centers —
all developed because of decades of government support.

💰 Government Subsidies & Incentives Over the Years

🔸 20% cash refund if 80% spending happens in Telangana

🔸 25% capital subsidy for VFX, animation, gaming sectors

🔸 ₹10 lakh subsidy for low-budget films

🔸 In 1965: ₹50,000 subsidy per film

A massive amount back then — and this practice continued for decades.

🔸 AP GO 116 — GST refund to producers

A viewer buys a ticket → pays tax →
a portion of that tax is returned to the producer!

🏗️ More benefits the industry received:

• Concessions on power charges for studios
• Stamp duty waivers on land registrations
• Single-window permission for shootings
• Government-funded welfare for cine workers:
– medical assistance
– child education support
– relief funds
– pension funds

Yet despite all this, only a few families became multi-millionaires,
while poor cine workers continue to struggle.

🔥 So the real question: For whom were these benefits given for 40 years?

Governments had one intention:
→ Movies should be cheaper to make
→ Viewers should watch for affordable prices
→ The industry should grow healthy

But what really happened?

💣 **Industry profits skyrocketed… promotion budgets exploded…

but ticket prices hit the sky!**

For movie promotions:
• Roads blocked
• Traffic jams
• Highways stopped
• Ambulances stuck
• Students & office-goers inconvenienced

All for private promotional events.

Police manage traffic & security —
with public money.

😤 What has the industry taken?

Land
Subsidies
Cash benefits
GST refunds
Infrastructure support
Tax exemptions
Police protection

Everything was taken — but what was given to the audience?

❌ ₹300–₹500–₹1000 ticket prices

❌ ₹30 popcorn → ₹700

❌ Benefit shows used as exploitation

❌ Mafia suppressing small films

🎤 Still they say: “We make films for the people”?

Look at:
• The mansions and villas of heroes
• Luxury cars
• Producers’ farmhouses
• Multi-crore assets

Are these signs of “making films for the people”?

For 40 years they enjoyed government benefits…
but burdened the viewer with skyrocketing costs.

Where is the justice in that?#oursociety #oursocietynational #oursocietymeadiagroup
