Delhi’s Defence to Become Stronger: A Multi-Layered Air Defence Shield

Delhi’s Defence to Become Stronger: A Multi-Layered Air Defence Shield

India is preparing to significantly strengthen the defence of its national capital, Delhi. In view of rising threats from modern warfare — including ballistic missiles, drones, hypersonic weapons, and advanced fighter aircraft — the Indian Air Force is working on establishing a comprehensive multi-layered air defence system around Delhi.

This system will provide protection at multiple ranges — from intercepting enemy aircraft and missiles at very long distances to neutralizing close-range threats near the city.

S-400 Sudarshan – The First Line of Defence

India has already inducted the Russian-made S-400 Triumf, known in India as Sudarshan. During Operation Sindoor, the system reportedly demonstrated strong performance in keeping enemy aircraft and missiles at bay.

There are plans to acquire an additional 5–10 squadrons to further strengthen the air defence network around Delhi and other strategic locations.

Project Kusha – A Major Indigenous Boost

India is also developing its own long-range air defence system under Project Kusha, led by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

With a projected range of 350–400 km, around 10 squadrons of this system are expected to be ordered. This marks a significant step toward strengthening India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) defence vision.

Medium & Short-Range Protection Layers

Akash-NG

The Akash-NG system, with a range of 70–80 km, is planned to be inducted in 5 squadrons. It will serve as a key medium-range defence shield.

QRSAM

For close-range threats, 2 squadrons of QRSAM (Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile) are expected to be deployed to counter sudden aerial attacks.

This layered approach ensures protection against ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, drones, and fighter aircraft at different engagement distances.

S-500 Prometheus – A Future Game Changer?

Russia’s next-generation S-500 Prometheus is considered even more advanced than the S-400.

Key capabilities reportedly include:

  • 500–600 km range

  • Interception of ICBMs and hypersonic missiles

  • Capability against stealth aircraft

  • Potential to target low-orbit satellites at altitudes of around 200 km

Following the success of the S-400, India has shown interest in the S-500. Discussions were reportedly held during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposed 2025 visit to India. However, no final deal has been confirmed yet. Russia has indicated exports would only be considered after meeting its own operational requirements.

An Impenetrable Shield for Delhi?

With the combined deployment of S-400 (and possibly S-500), along with indigenous systems like Project Kusha, Akash-NG, and QRSAM, Delhi could soon be protected by one of the most robust multi-layered air defence networks in the region.

This represents a major strategic advancement for India, particularly in response to evolving aerial threats from neighboring regions. Strengthening the capital’s air defence is not just about protecting Delhi — it reflects a broader transformation in India’s national security architecture.
