As part of the nationwide ‘Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions’ (BDS) movement in solidarity with the people of Palestine, a protest was organized in Hyderabad. The demonstration took place in front of the McDonald’s outlet in Kalasiguda under the leadership of the Indian People in Solidarity with Palestine (IPSP). Various organizations, including Disha Students’ Union and Naujawan Bharat Sabha, also participated. Similar protests were held across major cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Rohtak, Chandigarh, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Patna.
Protesters used eye-catching posters, slogans, and creative performances to raise awareness among the public. A satirical performance by IPSP members Yashwanth and Mahipal drew significant attention. They acted as promoters of McDonald’s and Coca-Cola, using irony to highlight the situation in Palestine. Through their performance, they illustrated how such corporations allegedly profit during times of conflict.
The demonstrators claimed that McDonald’s franchises have provided free meals and discounts to Israeli soldiers, while Coca-Cola continues its operations in occupied territories. They criticized these corporations for prioritizing profits over human rights and indirectly supporting war conditions.
Speaking at the protest, IPSP representative Srija described the dire situation in Palestine. She stated that tens of thousands of Palestinians, including women and children, have lost their lives, while many others have been injured, displaced, or gone missing. She also pointed out the large-scale destruction of homes, hospitals, and essential infrastructure, and highlighted the inhumane conditions faced by thousands of detainees.
She further criticized recent legislative measures by Israel, stating that stricter laws are being imposed on Palestinian prisoners. In this context, she urged people in India to remember their own history of colonial struggle and support the BDS movement.
The protest received a positive response from passersby, many of whom stopped to observe, engage in discussions, and express solidarity. Pamphlets explaining the background of the Palestine issue and countering what protesters described as misleading narratives were distributed.
The demonstration concluded with a call to intensify the boycott of companies allegedly involved in the violence against Palestinians. IPSP stated that it would continue organizing similar protests in the future to reach a wider audience and build greater awareness.#oursociety #oursocietynational #oursocietymeadiagroup.jpg)
