Workshop Highlights: The workshop began with Zhara Begum, Lecturer at the Technical Education & Skill Development Department, providing the context and significance of apprenticeship training programs. She highlighted the ongoing efforts by the UT Administration to promote youth participation in on-the-job training, enabling them to acquire valuable skills in their chosen fields. Begum also briefed the attendees about the apprenticeship opportunities created by hotels and government departments in Ladakh.
Dr. Tsewang Thinlas, Executive Engineer at PMGSY, Leh, emphasized the various apprenticeship opportunities available in government departments, such as Project Management, Project Coordinator, and Work Supervisor roles. He stressed that engaging in such programs allows individuals to learn new skills and gain a deeper understanding of organizational operations.
Er Urgain Nurboo, Assistant Executive Engineer at PHE, Leh, announced that PHE, Leh would soon launch its own apprenticeship program to provide interested students with practical training opportunities. Kunzes Dolma from the District Industry Center highlighted the schemes offered under the Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), while Beronica Barua from Industries and Commerce focused on the food processing schemes available under the PMEGP.
Representatives from reputed hotels in Leh emphasized the importance of self-assessment and self-awareness for career growth in the hospitality sector. They shared insights on the potential career paths and opportunities for apprentices in the hotel industry.
In conclusion, the workshop on Apprenticeship Training Program in Leh served as a platform to educate students about the benefits of on-the-job training. The resource persons from various sectors highlighted the apprenticeship opportunities available in government departments and hotels. Zhara Begum emphasized the importance of creating more apprenticeship opportunities in both the public and private sectors, while emphasizing the responsibility of establishments to supervise and guide apprentices during their training. The workshop shed light on the Apprenticeship Act 1961, which mandates establishments with a workforce of 30 or more to engage apprentices. This initiative by the Technical Education & Skill Development Department aims to foster a skilled workforce in Ladakh and contribute to the overall development of the region.
