Politics and Algorithms’ Book Released in Chennai CPI(M) Calls for Democratic Use of Digital Technology

Chennai hosts the release of Politics and Algorithms

The book Politics and Algorithms, authored by R. Bhadri, a member of the CPI(M) Tamil Nadu State Committee, was officially released at the CPI(M) State Committee Office in Chennai on Thursday, August 20. Published by Bharathi Puthakalayam, the book explores the growing influence of algorithms, social media, and digital technologies on politics, democracy, and public discourse.

The release event brought together senior CPI(M) leaders, party members, and media representatives for a discussion on the political implications of the digital age.

Book released by P. Shanmugam

The book was released by P. Shanmugam, State Secretary of CPI(M) Tamil Nadu, while K.P. Lenin received the first copy. The programme was coordinated by R. Sudhir, a member of the party’s state committee.

During his address, Shanmugam emphasized that the rapid expansion of social media, artificial intelligence, and information technology has transformed how people communicate, organize, and participate in democratic processes. He said understanding these technologies is no longer optional but essential for citizens and progressive movements alike.

“As social media and information technology evolve rapidly, society must understand these new technologies and use them effectively. This book serves as a practical guide for understanding and constructively engaging with digital platforms.” — P. Shanmugam

Algorithms and the future of media

Presiding over the function, S. Kannan, a member of the CPI(M) State Secretariat, highlighted the profound impact of digitisation and automation on journalism and the news industry.

He noted that algorithms increasingly determine what people see online, influencing news visibility, public opinion, and political conversations. According to Kannan, digital platforms can unintentionally—or deliberately—limit the reach of dissenting voices, making it crucial for democratic and people’s movements to develop strategies that overcome algorithmic barriers.

Why the book matters

Politics and Algorithms examines the relationship between technology and political communication, offering insights into how algorithm-driven platforms shape public narratives and civic engagement.

The publication aims to help readers:

  • Understand how social media algorithms influence visibility and engagement.

  • Explore the political impact of digitisation and automation.

  • Recognize challenges faced by dissenting and democratic voices online.

  • Develop constructive approaches to using digital technology for social change.

As digital platforms become increasingly central to political communication, Politics and Algorithms arrives at a significant moment. The book encourages readers to critically examine the role of technology in democracy while promoting informed, ethical, and constructive engagement with social media and algorithm-driven systems.
