Thousands of Students Join SFI’s Azadi Week Gathering in Talasari

Talasari, Maharashtra: A massive student gathering

was organised by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) Thane-Palghar District Committee in Talasari, Maharashtra, as part of the organisation’s Azadi Week programme. Thousands of students participated in the gathering and pledged to strengthen the struggle to protect public education.

The programme highlighted the growing challenges faced by students and educational institutions across Maharashtra. The closure of schools has emerged as a serious concern in several districts, while budget cuts and inadequate government support are reportedly pushing a number of educational institutions towards the aided category.

The gathering was addressed by SFI Thane-Palghar District President Com. Bhaskar and Secretary Com. Virendra, along with AIDWA National Leader Com. Mariam Dhawale and AIDWA Maharashtra Secretary Com. Prachi and other student and women’s movement leaders.

Speakers stressed the importance of organised student politics in defending the right to education. They criticised what they described as anti-student policies being implemented under the National Education Policy (NEP) and called for an alternative education policy centred on public education, equality and accessibility.

The speakers also emphasised the need to strengthen student organisations and collective struggles. Referring to the recent student movement at Jantar Mantar, they said sustained mobilisation and organised resistance can compel governments to acknowledge failures and respond to students’ demands.

The programme carried forward the legacy of social reformers and education pioneers such as Savitri Phule and Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, whose struggles challenged social barriers and expanded access to education.

Raising the slogan “Savitri, Rokeya, Godu Tai – Shiksha Bachane Ke Liye Ladega SFI”, the participating students reaffirmed their determination to defend public education and resist policies that they believe undermine educational opportunities for ordinary students.

The massive participation at Talasari demonstrated the growing concern among students over school closures, education funding and policy changes. SFI leaders said the organisation would continue to mobilise students across Maharashtra and intensify the struggle for accessible, affordable and quality public education for all.

The gathering concluded with a collective commitment from thousands of students to remain organised and continue the struggle to “Save Education, Save Public Education.
