The Telangana government has reiterated its commitment to addressing the problems faced by auto-rickshaw workers and ensuring better livelihood opportunities and welfare measures for the community.
Representatives of the Telangana KKC Union recently met me at the Minister’s Quarters and brought several issues concerning auto-rickshaw workers to my attention. The government assured the representatives that their concerns would be examined seriously and appropriate steps would be taken.
Welfare Board for Auto Workers Soon
The government is committed to resolving the long-pending issues of auto-rickshaw workers. As part of its welfare measures, a dedicated Welfare Board for auto workers will be established soon to support their livelihood and address their concerns.
Government to Examine Auto Fare Hike Demand
Auto-rickshaw workers’ unions have been requesting an increase in passenger fares. Auto fares were last revised in 2012, and nearly 14 years have passed without a revision.
With the significant rise in petrol and diesel prices, vehicle costs, maintenance expenses and other operational costs, the government will consider the difficulties faced by auto workers.
However, any decision on increasing fares will be taken only after carefully examining all aspects, while ensuring that passengers are not subjected to an excessive additional financial burden.
No Plans for RTC to Operate Electric Autos
The government has also clarified reports suggesting that the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) is planning to purchase and operate electric autos.
There is no truth in such reports. The RTC has no intention of affecting the employment and livelihood of auto-rickshaw workers and will not purchase electric autos.
The government’s objective is to strengthen last-mile connectivity rather than compete with auto-rickshaw workers.
Focus on Better Last-Mile Connectivity
Plans are being prepared to integrate different public transportation systems, including RTC buses, railways and the Metro, to provide passengers with a convenient and seamless transport network from their homes to their final destinations.
Auto-rickshaws will continue to play an important role in providing last-mile connectivity as part of this integrated public transport system.
Up to ₹1.50 Lakh Assistance for Electric Retrofitting
In another important step, the Cabinet has decided to provide financial assistance of up to ₹1.50 lakh per auto-rickshaw to help convert existing petrol and diesel autos into electric vehicles through retrofitting.
The initiative is aimed at supporting auto workers in transitioning towards cleaner and more economical transportation technology without forcing them to replace their existing vehicles completely.
Government Promises More Support
The government has assured auto-rickshaw workers that more beneficial measures will be announced soon. It reiterated that it will work with sincerity and commitment to resolve their long-standing problems.
The government also emphasized that the livelihood and employment of auto-rickshaw workers will receive full protection and that their welfare will remain an important priority.
